Frequently we’ll present you a collector like you. He will speak about hobby in this interview. Today, it’s Nico speaking about cards!
-Bonjour, peux-tu te présenter aux lecteurs ? Hello, could you introduce yourself ?
Nico, 40 ans. Je travaille en fiction (ciné / séries TV) en tant que sound designer. Fan des Golden State Warriors depuis mes 12 ans, je suis également community manager du compte Dubnation France sur les principaux réseaux sociaux.
Nico, 40 years old. I work in fiction (movies / TV series) as a sound designer. Fan of the Golden State Warriors since I was 12, I am also the community manager of the Dubnation France account on the main social networks.
-Depuis quand collectionnes-tu et comment es-tu tombé dans le hobby ? How long are you collecting ? How do you start collecting ?
J’ai commencé une petite collection au début des 90s, comme beaucoup d’autres. Petits packs achetés avec l’argent de poche à la librairie. On s’échangeait avec les potes et je ne gardais que les cartes Warriors. Mais je suis vraiment (re)rentré dans le hobby il y a 5-6 ans. Les Warriors venaient de remporter un titre et je cherchais inconsciemment des moyens d’archiver / célébrer ça, après tant d’années de loose.
I started a small collection in the early 90s, like many others. Small packs bought with pocket money at the bookstore. We traded with the friends and I only kept the Warriors cards. But I really entered the hobby 5-6 years ago. The Warriors had just won a title and I was subconsciously looking for ways to archive / celebrate that, after so many years of being loose.
-Te souviens-tu de ta toute première carte ? Laquelle était-ce ? Do you remember your first card ? Which one was it ?
Non désolé, absolument pas. D’autant qu’avant les cartes de basket, j’adorais les album stickers panini pour le foot.
No sorry, absolutely not. Especially since before the basketball cards, I loved panini sticker albums for football.
-Quels sports, quelles cartes et/ou collections recherches-tu ? What kind of sports, what kind of cards or collections are you looking for ?
Je suis un team collector « large ». Je prends toutes collections / toutes cartes avec des joueurs présents et passés (jusqu’à la période Philadelphia Warriors) . Mais je cherche également toutes cartes de ces joueurs sous maillot universitaire, McDonalds game, FIBA, Allstar game, TeamUSA etc… Sans oublier les coachs ! J’en ai des milliers mais malheureusement aucune database pour répertorier tout ça. Toujours eu un peu la flegme. Je le regrette parfois, notamment quand il faut fouiller dans des trade lists. Je m’en sors car tout est classé par joueur. Et à l’intérieur, les sets/series sont regroupées.
I am a “large” collector’s team. I take all collections / cards with present and past players (up to the Philadelphia Warriors era). But I am also looking for all cards of these players under university jersey, McDonalds game, FIBA, Allstar game, TeamUSA etc… Not to mention the coaches! I have thousands of them but unfortunately no database to list it all. I regret it sometimes, especially when you have to dig into trade lists. I’m fine because everything is ranked by player. And inside, the sets / series are grouped together.

Je vais partir naturellement à la chasse des Rookie Cards de James Wiseman et Nico Mannion.

-Quel est ton budget mensuel ? What’s your monthly budget ?
Probablement aux alentours de 100€. Pas sur de valider ça si j’étudie réellement mes relevés Paypal. j’ose pas.
Probably around 100 €. Not sure to validate this if I’m actually reviewing my Paypal statements. I don’t dare.
-Quelle est la carte de tes rêves ? What’s your dream’s card ?
Je rêvais longtemps d’un auto de Steph… Ca me suffit !
Bon après j’avoue que j’aimerais bien aussi une RC auto de Curry mais le banquier va faire la gueule.
I had dreamed of a auto card from Steph for a long time… That’s enough for me!
Well after I admit that I would also like a RC car from Curry but the banker is going to be upset.
-Quel(s) conseil(s) donnerais-tu à un débutant ? Aurais-tu un bon plan à lui donner ? Have you an advice to a beginner ? Have you a good hobby plan ?
Essayer de garder le plus longtemps possible le gout pour les échanges, et ne pas snober les cartes de base.
Try to keep a taste for trading as long as possible, and not to snub the basic cards.
-Quelle est ta vision du hobby actuellement ? What’s your actual hobby’s vision ?
Je n’ai jamais été à une bourse, ni dans un shop physique de cartes.
Je ne connais le hobby que via Facebook, Twitter, Ebay et Comc… ca reste froid, malgré les dizaines de supers rencontres virtuelles voire physique avec d’autres collectionneurs.
Pour la petite histoire, j’organise régulièrement depuis 2016 des concours pour faire gagner des cartes sur mon compte twitter (au départ en partenariat avec AllStar Shop), et je suis ravi de la propagation du virus (de la carte) sur ce réseau depuis quelques mois. je suis moins ravi de l’augmentation surréaliste des boxs, ni du calvaire à trouver des supplies.
I’ve never been to a stock exchange, or a physical card shop.
I only know the hobby through Facebook, Twitter, Ebay and Comc… it’s still cold, despite the many virtual or even physical encounters with other collectors.
For the record, since 2016 I regularly organize contests to win cards on my twitter account (initially in partnership with AllStar Shop), and I am delighted with the spread of the virus (from the card) on this network since some months. I’m less thrilled with the surreal increase in boxes, nor with the ordeal of finding supplies.
