Nous allons vous présenter régulièrement l’un d’entre vous. Celui-ci aura la parole dans cette interview. Aujourd’hui, Patrick qui nous parle des cartes!

Frequently we’ll present you a collector like you. He will speak about hobby in this interview. Today, it’s Patrick speaking about cards!

 

-Bonjour, peux-tu te présenter aux lecteurs ? Hello, could you introduce yourself ?

Je me nomme Patrick TAPIN. Je suis né en 1968 (52 ans). Je suis photographe sportif.

 

My name is Patrick TAPIN. I was born in 1968 (52 years old). I am a sports photographer.

 

-Depuis quand collectionnes-tu et comment es-tu tombé dans le hobby ? How long are you collecting ? How do you start collecting ?  

Je collectionne depuis 1987. Un ami revenant de Chicago me ramène 4 cartes des Bulls de Chicago. Il s’agissait de Fleer 1986-87. De mémoire, il y avait Orlando Wooldridge, George Gervin, Charles Oakley et Sidney Green. Je crois que je les ai gardés dans le fond d’une de mes nombreuses boites de cartes. A l’époque, Michael Jordan n’est pas encore très connu.

 

I have been collecting since 1987. A friend returning from Chicago brings me back 4 Chicago Bulls cards. It was about Fleer 1986-87. From memory, there were Orlando Wooldridge, George Gervin, Charles Oakley and Sidney Green. I think I kept them in the back of one of my many card boxes. At the time, Michael Jordan was not yet well known.

 

-Te souviens-tu de ta toute première carte ? Laquelle était-ce ? Do you remember your first card ? Which one was it ?  

La première qui m’est apparue est Charles Oakley. Le début d’une grande aventure qui dure toute une vie. La suite fut difficile car impossible den acquérir d’autres. Il a fallu attendre les années 89/90 pour jouir de cette passion. A partir de ce moment, je suis devenu accroc, voir fou !

 

The first one that dawned on me was Charles Oakley. The start of a great adventure that lasts a lifetime. The rest was difficult because it was impossible to acquire others. It was not until the years 89/90 to enjoy this passion. From that moment, I became addicted to see crazy!

 

-Quels sports, quelles cartes et/ou collections recherches-tu ? What kind of sports, what kind of cards or collections are you looking for ?  

Je suis capable de tout collectionner. Je me suis même vu collectionner des cartes sur les papes. J’ai collectionné les cartes de films, j’ai collectionné du foot US, du Hockey sur glace, particulièrement Jaromir Jagr, Mario Lemieux, Chris Chelios, Ron Francis et Mats Sundin. Il y avait bien sur le basket. Dans les années 90, je comptais environ 250 000 cartes. Il me fallait deux pièces pour tout ranger, une centaine de classeurs, plein de boites remplies de cartes. Je vivais cartes. Et puis, je n’ai pas réussi à passer les années 2000. A partir de 2006, j’ai revendu 80 % de mes cartes en gardant une partie basket et Jaromir Jagr en Hockey sur glace.

J’ai repris le hobby depuis bientôt deux ans. Je cours après toutes les cartes entre 2006 et aujourd’hui.

 

I am able to collect everything. I even saw myself collecting cards on the popes. I collect movie cards, I collect US football, Ice Hockey, especially Jaromir Jagr, Mario Lemieux, Chris Chelios, Ron Francis and Mats Sundin. There was of course basketball. In the 90s, I had around 250,000 cards. I needed two rooms to put everything away, a hundred binders, lots of boxes full of cards. I was living cards. And then, I did not manage to make it through the 2000s. From 2006, I sold 80% of my cards while keeping a basketball part and Jaromir Jagr in Ice Hockey.

I resumed the hobby for almost two years. I run after all the cards between 2006 and today.

 

-Quelle est la plus belle carte de ta collection ? What’s your most beautiful card in your collection ?

Je naï pas une carte plus belle qu’une autre. Je les aime toutes. Jaime autant une reg qu’un auto. J’ai une préférence pour les inserts des années 90. S’il faut en choisir une, je dirai la Penny Hardaway Upper Deck Predictor 1995-96. Mais, bon si on me demande un autre jour ça sera bien évidement une autre.

Ma façon de collectionner aujourd’hui est celle de faire des joueurs. J’en collectionne environ 60. Et je possède un minimum de 400 cartes par joueur. Le premier que j’ai collectionné était David Robinson. Le dernier que j’ai commencé récemment est John Wall.

 

I don’t have a card more beautiful than another. I love them all. I love a reg as much as a car. I have a preference for inserts from the 90s. If I have to choose one, I would say the Penny Hardaway Upper Deck Predictor 1995-96. But, well if someone asks me another day it will obviously be another.

My way of collecting today is that of making players. I collect about 60 of them. And I have a minimum of 400 cards per player. The first one I collected was David Robinson. The last one I started recently is John Wall.

 

-Quel est ton prochain achat ? What’s your next purchase ?  

Aucune idée. En ce moment, j’essaie de retrouver les cartes qui me manquent sur certains de mes joueurs comme Abdur Rahim, Steve Francis, Stephon Marbury et d’autres encore. Concernant Shareef Abdur Rahim, j’en ai beaucoup et je n’arrive plus à trouver ce qu’il me manque. Alors je passe à un autre joueur.

 

No idea. Right now I’m trying to find the cards I’m missing on some of my players like Abdur Rahim, Steve Francis, Stephon Marbury and others. Regarding Shareef Abdur Rahim, I have a lot and I can’t find what I’m missing anymore. So I move on to another player.

 

-Quel est ton budget mensuel ? What’s your monthly budget ?  

Dans les années 90, mon budget était de 3000 francs par mois. Aujourd’hui, je me fais plaisir à petits prix. Je collectionne des petits joueurs et donc mon budget est restreint (environ 40 euros/mois). Je ne veux pas rentrer dans le jeu qui consiste à acheter une carte hors de prix.

 

In the 90s, my budget was 3000 francs per month. Today, I indulge myself at low prices. I collect small players and therefore my budget is limited (around 40 euros / month). I don’t want to get into the game of buying an overpriced card.

 

-Quelle est la carte de tes rêves ? What’s your dream’s card ?  

Je ne suis pas adepte des cartes inaccessibles. Un rêve est un rêve s’il n’est pas accessible. J’aimerais revoir dans les nouvelles collections des inserts de qualité.

 

I am not a fan of inaccessible cards. A dream is a dream if it is not accessible. I would like to see quality inserts in the new collections.

 

-Quel(s) conseil(s) donnerais-tu à un débutant ? Aurais-tu un bon plan à lui donner ? Have you an advice to a beginner ? Have you a good hobby plan ?  

Depuis de longues années, j’aide les jeunes à démarrer. Pour cela, j’essaie d’acheter des lots à un cout très peu élevé et je donne ces lots à des jeunes qui ont envie de collectionner. Je lai fait au moins une cinquantaine de fois en 30 ans. Ça ne fonctionne pas souvent mais ça me fait plaisir sur le moment. Mon but étant qu’ils attrapent ce virus qui ne nous fait pas que du bien mais c’est tellement bon !

Pour les débutants je conseille toujours de prendre du temps. Peu importe le budget, il faut qu’à chaque carte, il y ait ce petit moment d’émotion, d’excitation. Ne pas rechercher systématiquement la grosse star comme je vois souvent. Un joueur correct qui fait 3 ou 4 saisons NBA, ça se collectionne avec autant de plaisir que MJ, Kobe ou Lebron. Gardez vos cartes pendant de longues années.

Je me bats souvent également pour leur faire comprendre qu’une carte ça se protège. Une carte = un sleeve au minimum.

Pour les bons plans, je ne suis plus l’homme de la situation. Depuis mon retour, il y a presque deux ans, je me borne à juste rattraper le peloton. Le hobby a change et je suis parfois largue par certaines subtilités notamment l’appréciation de la valeur des cartes. Mais bon, ça revient petit à petit.

 

For many years, I have helped young people get started. For that, I try to buy lots at a very low cost and I give these lots to young people who want to collect. I have done it at least fifty times in 30 years. It doesn’t often work but it makes me happy at the time. My goal being for them to catch this virus which doesn’t only make us feel good but it’s so good!

For beginners I always recommend taking time. No matter the budget, every card needs to have that little moment of emotion, excitement. Do not always look for the big star as I often see. A decent player who makes 3 or 4 NBA seasons, it collects with as much pleasure as MJ, Kobe or Lebron. Keep your cards for years to come.

I also often fight to make them understand that a card protects itself. One card = one sleeve at least.

For good deals, I’m no longer the man for the job. Since my return, almost two years ago, I have limited myself to just catching up with the peloton. The hobby has changed and I am sometimes overwhelmed by certain subtleties including the appreciation of the value of cards. But hey, it’s coming back little by little.

 

-Quelle est ta vision du hobby actuellement ?  What’s your actual hobby’s vision ?  

Comme je viens de le dire, Il a bien changé depuis une dizaine d’années. Les prix des boites ont largement augmenté. Certains joueurs sont hors de prix. Avant, on était extasié devant un insert, aujourd’hui certains font la gueule devant un autographe. Les cartes sont devenues un business pour beaucoup de gens. Ça achète, ça revend. Moi je garde tout, au désespoir de ma femme.

 

As I said, He has changed a lot in the last ten years or so. The prices of boxes have greatly increased. Some players are overpriced. Before, we were ecstatic in front of an insert, now some people shout at an autograph. Cards have become a business for a lot of people. It buys, it resells. I keep everything, to my wife’s despair.

 

-As-tu des anecdotes sympas ou non depuis que tu collectionnes ? Have you got fun facts since you’re collecting ?

Dans les années 2000, j’étais très accroché sur une carte de Shareef Abdur Rahim. Il s’agit de la Exquisite Auto Patch 2004/05 limitée à 100 exemplaires.  Très présent sur eBay à l’époque, j’ai décidé d’attraper tous les exemplaires de cette fameuse carte. Malheureusement, je n’étais pas tout seul. Un américain a pris la même décision de tout attraper. On s’est battu pendant pas moins de deux ans. Il avait l’avantage de ne pas se lever en pleine nuit. Sur les 100 exemplaires, 18 sont allées chez moi. Lui, je ne sais pas.

 

In the 2000s, I was very hooked on a card of Shareef Abdur Rahim. This is the Exquisite Auto Patch 2004/05 limited to 100 copies. Very active on eBay at the time, I decided to grab all copies of this famous card. Unfortunately, I was not alone. An American made the same decision to grab it all. We fought for no less than two years. He had the advantage of not getting up in the middle of the night. Of the 100 copies, 18 went to my house. Him, I don’t know.

 

-Que souhaites-tu développer dans ce monde “fermé” en France et en Europe ? What would you want to see growing up in this “closed” world in France and Europe ?  

Je vais organiser un show dans ma Ville de Caen sur les cartes. Je n’ai pas encore de dates mais je pense au printemps 2021 ou 2022. Aujourd’hui, on voit des bourses qui fonctionnent plutôt bien mais qui ne concernent que des adeptes voir de grands spécialistes de la carte. Pour ce show, mon but est d’ouvrir à tous et à toutes les portes de la carte. Invitations des sportifs, entretien avec les sportifs, bourses d’échange, seront au programme. Un peu, un grenelle de la carte, ouvert au grand public. Ça va être mon grand défi des deux prochaines années.

 

I will organize a show in my City of Caen about the cards. I don’t have any dates yet, but I’m thinking of spring 2021 or 2022. Today, we see scholarships that are working pretty well but which only concern followers see great card specialists. For this show, my goal is to open the doors of the map to everyone. Invitations from athletes, interviews with athletes, exchange grants will be on the program. A little, a grenelle of the card, open to the general public. This will be my big challenge for the next two years.
